Transition Program
Country Health SA - Port Lincoln is dedicated
to providing clinical support and learning experiences in a supported education
environment, to enhance the knowledge base and clinical skills of the newly
Registered Nurse. As a professional 'nurse education' program the Country Health
SA - Port Lincoln Transition Program is aimed at increasing the graduate nurses
ANCI competencies and their professional development within a country health
perspective reflecting the principles of adult education. The Eyre Region also
aims to assist the graduate nurse in the transition from novice registered nurse
to advanced beginner registered nurse (Benner, 1984).
The Regional Nursing Support Officer
coordinates the Transition Program, in close consultation with the Directors
of Nursing.
It is acknowledged that Graduate Nurses
bring currency of knowledge (primarily theory based) from the tertiary education
sector and the continued exposure to new graduates also proves to be invigorating,
and challenging to existing staff and health care professionals.
What does the Program offer?
1 day orientation to program with the Regional Nursing Support Officer, 2
days orientation to the ward and 5 study days (all paid).
Support and preceptorship within each and every Health Unit.
Comprehensive Resource folder provided on first day.
5 weeks supernumerary placement (1 x 2 week block, and 1 x 3 week block) which
may be conducted in a variety of health settings including Eyre Region Health
Units, community health, mental health, aboriginal health, renal dialysis,
dementia care, midwifery and the list goes on.
A minimum of 2 weeks must be spent within a Health Unit outside of your
originating employing Health Unit to meet the requirements of the Program.
The opportunity to move within Health Units of the Region to allow Graduate
Nurses the opportunity to experience different work place cultures, practises
and specialisations.
Graduates participate in 'performance appraisals' at set times throughout
the year to help map their progress and transition. This process also helps
in identifying areas of need, with each graduate encouraged to set 'learning
goals'.
The Regional Nursing Support Officer will be directly supporting
the graduate nurse in the first week of the program.
The Regional Nursing Support Officer travels to all 10 Health Units twice
within the Graduate Year.
A luncheon and certificate presentation ceremony is conducted on the final
study day (on completion of all requirements of the program).
Further professional training and development opportunities will be supported
for the Graduate Nurses during the 12 month period where it is determined
that it is suitable and relevant for the nurse. This support may include:
- Additional study time
- Travel assistance (including airfares)
- Meal and accommodation assistance
(as per Government regulations)
- Peer shadowing
Travel and accommodation is at the expense of the Country Health SA for all
travel conducted in relation to the Transition Program.
